On June 5, 1960, Arthur Medeira was topmost man of five lookouts on the mast of the Sanson Joy, looking for swordfish. A port side guide line eyebolt parted, and the mast cracked. He fell backward, landing on his back. Four other crew members were injured. The Japanese freighter Matsudosan Maru, with a doctor on board, arrived too late to save Mr. Medeira, who died of a fractured skull.
